This is the first time UEFA has given an award for the best player in the competition.
While receiving – the newly introduced – award, 24-year-old Pogba said:
“I am very happy to be the first person to win the UEFA Europa League Player of the Season award. Hopefully, the new season will be as successful as the last one for both me and my club. Thank you so much.”
The voting jury was composed of the coaches of the 48 clubs that participated in the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League, together with 55 journalists selected by the European Sport Media (ESM) group.
The coaches were not allowed to vote for players of their own team while the final result was based on the total number of points from all the votes cast by the coaches and journalists.
